MAJORCA

The Capital of the province of Balearic islands is Palma de Mallorca, which is one of the oldest cities in the world. Some say it is the best city to live in and call it the pearl of the Mediterranean. It is situated on the biggest of the Balearic Islands, Majorca (or Mallorca in Spanish). The name Mallorca comes from Latin meaning “the larger one”. You can find anything you want there: it has a wealthy culture, beautiful nature, spectacular beaches, fun parties and delicious food.

One of the most noticeable sights in Majorca is the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma that overlooks the sea. Once a Muslim mosque it was a remodeled in the 14th century by orders of the King of Aragon, James the conqueror, to thank the Saints for saving him in a deadly storm on his way to Majorca.

Centuries later this Gothic building had to be renovated after withstanding an earthquake and the architect Antoni Gaudi was assisting in restoration, adding a huge rose window and a wrought-iron canopy.

Next to the Cathedral you can see the Royal Palace of La Almudaina built in the 14th century and served as summer residence of Jaime II

Palma has one of the most important ports in Spain, It is surrounded by a pedestrian walkway lined with palm trees along the Mediterranean coast with luxury hotels, nightclubs and numerous open-air restaurants right across the Marina port that is filled with fishing boats and luxury yachts.

Playa de Palma is a beach area during the day that turns into a place to drink and have fun at night. The beach attracts families looking to swim and do water activities in the Bay of Palma, as well as enjoy the water park at Aqualand El Arenal and the large aquarium with sharks called Palma Aquarium

Bellver Castle

One of the main tourist attractions of the island is the city's History Museum in Bellver Castle. The name “Bellver” means ‘Beautiful view’ which is self-explanatory. It is a Gothic-style castle on a hill, 3 km to the west of the center of Palma. It was built in the 14th century for King James II of Majorca. First serving as the residence of the Kings of Majorca, and then ironically served as a military prison throughout the 18th to mid-20th century.

Es Torrent de Pareis

Es Torrent de Pareis is a deep canyon by the sea with hiking trails, scenic views, caves and a small beach, the stream of the same name crosses the mountain range Sierra de Tramuntana and descends to the Mediterranean from the lakes Gorg Blau and Cuber. In this area you can find stone beaches surrounded by beautiful wild nature: playa de piedras, Cala Tuent and sa Calobra.

Cuevas del Drach

The birth town of Rafael Nadal, Manacor has amazing Ancient Cuevas del Drach or Dragon Caves, you can sail on a boat inside the cave and then enjoy a concert of classical music there. A bit smaller Caves with music and light shows are called Cuevas Dels Hams or “Fishhook Caves”.

One of the most famous villages of Mallorca is Valldemossa where you can find the Carthusian monastery and it is a place where great people used to stay. In 1835 George Sant and Federic Chopin came here for 4 months. Cartoixa de Valldemossa also served as the royal residence.

In 1981 a museum, the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, was established. It is dedicated to the work of the famous artist Joan Miro, who lived and died in Mallorca.

If you are a fan of nature you should visit natural parks: Es pontas and Mondragó.

Also, you can find an example of Talaiotic Culture Tumulus near the archaeological park of Puig de sa Morisca.

All in all Majorca has everything you can wish for, but if you need to find your peace and quiet environment and forget all your worries you should definitely come to the lovely island of Menorca.
