Lanzarote is the third most populated island in the Canaries, after Tenerife and Gran Canaria. With an area of 845.94 km², it is the fourth largest island in the archipelago.
The name of the island comes from the Genoese sailor Lanceloto Malocello, who visited it in the 14th century.
A volcano eruption in the 1700s covered the island in ashes leaving a unique atmosphere. The must-see of Gran Canaria is of course the National Park Timanfaya which is really out of this world place and the closest thing to being on Mars. You can witness there still enjoy the amazing view of this exceptionally unique place.
Mentioned earlier architect César Manrique has and his House-Museum and his foundation which dedicated to conserve and disseminate the work of the Canarian artist.
One more sight worth visiting is the Green cave (Or Cueva Verde in spanish) which is a volcanic structure located in the municipality of HarÃa, north of the island of Lanzarote. It is part of the volcanic tube originated by the eruption of the La Corona volcano.
Another amazing place created by senor Manrique is called Jameos de agua, it is a true must-see of Lanzarote. And not only you can enjoy its architecture but also its restaurant and the amphitheatre. An old quarry converted to a botanical garden by senor Manrique called The Lanzarote Cactus Garden.
Lanzarote is a host of one of the festivals called the Festival of the Diabletes of Teguise. The town of Teguise is one of the most beautiful little towns in Spain.
