Typical Spanish Breakfast

In Spain breakfast starts at 7 am till 9 a.m.

Spaniards love to go to get breakfasts at their local bar as a ritual and they prefer coffee for breakfast.

Different types of coffee:

Un cafe solo a.k.a an espresso,
Un cortado - an espresso with a little bit of milk
Un cafe con leche which means coffee with milk,
Un capuchino - a coffee with foamed milk and it's always way more expensive than coffee with milk, and sometimes served in a smaller cup.
Un Americano - is half coffee, half water.
Cafe con hielo or Ice coffee
Cafe bombón - a typical coffee from Alicante, it a black coffee mixed with condensed milk, which is served in a glass cup
Un Barraquito or Canarian coffee which consists of condensed milk, liquor, coffee and milk.
Un Carajillo - a small hot drink that combines coffee and some alcohol like cognac, rum, or whiskey.

And of course you can order other drinks like decaf coffee, water, fresh orange juice, black tea or whatever is on the menu. But coffee is the most typical thing here.

Moving on to the actual dishes, starting with:

#Tostadas y Bocadillos

Tostada is a toasted slice of bread and Bocadillo is a sandwich. You can pick the toppings that are available like Manchego cheese or a jamon.  A popular one in Andalusia, is toasted bread with jam and butter. But in Catalonia for instance the most typical thing is bread with tomato, Catalans literally put a crushed tomato in every piece of bread they can find and I think it’s beautiful.

#Huevos estrellados or huevos rotos

It is another popular breakfast especially in Madrid. They are eggs that were fried in plenty of olive oil and are typically served with French fries, chips, and meat.

#Tortilla con patata

Potato omelet also known as Spanish omelet is another popular breakfast option. It’s made of potatoes, onions and eggs cooked in extra virgin olive oil, and it’s often served with bread. You can also eat it for lunch as a tapa.

#Breakfast Empanada

Empanadas are turnovers which come in a variety of fillings.

# Magdalenas, donuts and croissants

They are a good option for those who prefer a quick breakfast before leaving for work. They are cheap and you can buy them at a local supermarket and eat it at home if you don’t wanna go to a bar. Magdalenas are tiny muffins that are often lemon-flavored and sprinkled with sugar. And croissants and donuts are pretty self explanatory. I recommend you try chocolate ones.

#Ensaimada

It is an extremely fluffy sweet pastry you should try in Mallorca island. It is shaped in the form of a coil, sprinkled with loads of powdered sugar and it comes in big sizes. Very tasty.

#Bizcocho

It is a light sponge cake flavored with aromatic Spanish lemon rid.

#Torrijas.

One of the most ancient deserts on our list, it is a variation of French toast but while the classic Spanish torrija is fried in oil and then coated with sugar, French toast is cooked in a pan by sprinkling sugar on it so that it caramelizes with the butter. Torrijas are closely linked to the Holy Week and Lent, especially because it is a dish that was originally prepared with the stale bread.

#Picatostes

Small toast pieces, or croutons, that have been fried with butter. This snack or breakfast can be served either hot or cold.

# Spanish Fruit Salad

Spain is highly abundant in fruits, which is why fruit salad is naturally one of the most popular breakfast foods. If you want something sweet but don't want any pastries, this one's for you.

#Churros y Porras

They are usually ordered from a special place called Churrería. When you are in Spain you gotta try churros with hot chocolate, It's an absolute classic. I personally prefer porras because they're thicker. Fun fact that a lot of Spaniards come to eat churros in the early morning after a night out.

In touristic cities like Barcelona and Madrid you can also find good places to have breakfasts and brunches that are not typical Spanish but cool modern breakfasts with instagram-worthy foods. There are also a lot of places with amazing views so keep that in mind while picking a place to have your breakfast.
