Things to do in Barcelona |
#1 Works of Antoni Gaudi.
Everything made by Antoni Gaudà is inspired by nature and faith. His works really give Barcelona its unique appeal and all of them deserve to be number 1 on my list. He architected cool buildings such as Casa Mila, Casa Batllo, Casa Vicens, Palau Güell. He also architected Park Güell intended as a residence for wealthy families but thankfully for us it ended up to be one of the most beautiful parks in the world opened for visitors.
The most impressive building I’ve ever seen is the breathtaking Sagrada Familia, designed by Antoni GaudÃ. The works on this amazing Basilica started in 1882, It is still under construction, and is planned to be finished by 2026. Both the exterior and the interior are absolutely magical; Once it’s finished it’ll be the tallest church in the world. If i had to pick one thing to see in Barcelona, Sagrada Familia would definitely be my pick.
Port Vell |
#2 Port Vell.
My second favorite sight is Barcelona waterfront harbor Port Vell which means the old port. It is always filled with cool yachts and the surrounding area is awesome. It is located at the end of the famous street La Rambla starting with the Columbus monument which serves as a reminder that Christopher Columbus reported to the Catholic Monarchs Isabella and Ferdinand in Barcelona after his first trip to the New World.
Port Vell is one of the most iconic areas in the city. It was reconstructed as part of the urban renewal program prior to the 1992 Barcelona Summer Olympic Games.
It also includes a cool swing bridge that serves as a barrier to open and close the harbor. On the other side of the port there is a cool shopping mall called Maremà gnum with the best Starbucks in the city in my opinion. They also have a little Victoria secret store. bars and restaurants, a multiplex cinema IMAX and one of Europe's largest aquariums.
My third favorite place is Camp Nou (which is Catalan for a New Field). It is the home stadium of football club Barcelona, opened in 1957. And it's the largest stadium in Europe, It has 99,354 seats which makes it the fourth largest football stadium in the world in capacity. If you are sport’s fan it’s definitely a must-see. I am a Barça fan, and it’s always fun to go to see a game.
My friend Ana and I at Plaza España |
#4 Plaza España.
My fourth favorite place in Barcelona is Plaza España or Spanish Square. It’s very nice. There is a big dancing fountain and a big National Palace with a museum of the national art museum of Catalunya. Near the museum there are different pavilions of different countries. Everything was built for the 1929 International Exposition that was held in Barcelona. Behind the National Palace there is an indoor sporting arena called Palau Sant Jordi where many international stars usually perform.
And on Plaza España there is also a bullfighting stadium that was converted to a big shopping mall called Arenas and on the rooftop you can witness the 360º view overlooking Barcelona. Worth noting that Bullfighting has been prohibited in Catalunya since 2010.
Fun fact there is an urban legend about Plaza España saying that the architect Eiffel actually wanted to put his famous Eiffel Tower here in Barcelona but the local government didn’t let him so he put it in Paris instead. However, Eiffel built one of the bridges in a nearby city called Girona. [Click here to read more about Girona]
#5 Triumfal Arch & Ciutadella Park.
My fifth favorite is Arc de Triomf and Ciudadela park. I count them as one because they are in the same area. The Arch was built by architect Josep Vilaseca i Casanovas as the main access gate for the 1888 Barcelona World Fair. It crosses over the wide central promenade of the Passeig de LluÃs Companys, leading to the Ciutadella Park which is located at the northern end of the promenade. The territory of the park includes the city zoo, the Palau del Parlament de Catalunya, a small lake, museums, and a large fountain designed by Josep Fontserè.
#6 Tibidabo.
My sixth favorite is the Tibidabo also known as the Magic Mountain. Because of the fact that it is the highest point and the tallest mountain in Barcelona. There you can see some amazing views over the city and the Sea. What is more, there is also a huge Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and an Amusement park. It loses the points for being quite far from the center but I think it’s still a must see.
#7 Plaça Catalunya.
Seventh favorite is Placa Catalunya. It’s basically the center of Barcelona, I usually meet with people there. And there I got my first iPhone in the Apple Store. It’s a very nice square with fountains and here is where the Rambla meets Passeig de gracia which is a street with notable buildings, luxury stores and hotels.
#8 Passeig Maritim.
Eighth is Passeig Maritim which is a nice promenade by the beach. There are also a bunch of beach bars to hangout and nightclubs Opium Pacha Shoko Catwalk Carpe Diem and a casino.
Barcelona Museum |
Barcelona Roman Ruins |
#9 Gothic Quarter.
Ninth is Gothic Quarter which is the historic centre of the old city of Barcelona. In this quarter you can find the oldest parts of the city of Barcelona which include the remains of the city's Roman wall and several notable landmarks such as Barcelona Cathedral, Remains of the Roman Temple and more...
#10 Bunkers del Carmel.
Lastly, my number Ten is the Bunkers del Carmel. It is one of the best viewpoints in Barcelona, super instagram-worthy and very romantic.
