Malaga letters next to the Alcazaba

Today's topic is Malaga, the capital of Costa del Sol, the second-most populous city in the autonomous community of Andalusía after Seville and the sixth most populous in Spain. 

Each year 6 million people come here to visit city's lovely sights such as Pablo Picasso Museum, Carmen Thyssen Museum, Gibralfaro castle, as well as Malaga’s old town and beaches

Today Malaga is a significant economic and cultural center, as well as an important transport hub on the Mediterranean coast. The city’s harbor is also the second busiest cruise port of the Iberian Peninsula. 

Málaga is mostly known for tourism, construction and technology services. The city has consolidated as a tech hub, with companies mainly concentrated in the Technology Park of Andalusia. It also hosts the headquarters of the region's largest bank, Unicaja, and it is the fourth-ranking city in Spain in terms of economic activity behind Madrid, Barcelona and Valencia.

Another popular walk leads up the hill to the Gibralfaro castle, offering panoramic views over the city. The castle was built by the moors during the Taifa period (11th century). Right next to the castle there is an old Muslim royal palace called the Alcazaba.

TRANSPORT

I previously mentioned Malaga's notorious port where we can see many cruise liners parked by.

If you prefer travelling by the air you will arrive into Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport. It is the 4th busiest airport in Spain.

If you travel by train, it will bring to The Málaga María Zambrano railway station, named after Malaga born essayist and philosopher. The station has been served by the AVE high-speed rail system since 2007 and is operated by the state-owned rail company Renfe.)

CRUSH COURSE HISTORY

Malaga was founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BCE and it is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The Phoenician walls are the oldest architectural remains in the city.

Later Malaga became a federation and then a Latin city in the Roman Empire,; While Muslim rule it was a thriving city of Al Andalus, four times the capital of the independent kingdom Taifa Malaga and after the Reconquista was annexed to the Castilian crown in 1487 that eventually formed a part of the unified kingdom of Spain in 1492. During the 19th century, Malaga became the first industrial city in Spain, at the same time, Malaga received the titles «Siempre denodada» y «La primera en el peligro de la libertad» ("Always fearless" and "First when freedom is in danger"), which are displayed on city ​​coat of arms. 

Malaga is the birthplace of famous artist Pablo Picasso and the actor Antonio Banderas. (The embankments of Malaga are named after them.)

GEOGRAPHY

The city is located in the center of a bay surrounded by mountain ranges. Two rivers flow through the city - Guadalmedina and Guadalhorce, which flow into the Mediterranean Sea. The old historic center of Málaga reaches the harbor to the south.

HIGHLIGHTS 

One of the main squares in the city center called  plaza de la Merced, here is where events and festivals usually take place. At the center of the square there is also an obelisk in homage to General Torrijos.  On the square there is also the birth house of the famous Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and here you can also take a picture with his statue. 

The most famous cathedral in Malaga is called La Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación and it was the only major building in the city to withstand the earthquake of 1680.  Its construction began in 1528 on the site of an Arab mosque and was completed in 1782. The building was supposed to have two towers, but due to lack of funds, only one tower was finished. Therefore, the Malaga Cathedral is popularly called "La Manquita" (which means- "One-armed lady"). 

Some notable and recently opened museums include the Museo Municipal de Málaga, the Museo de Málaga (Fine Arts and Archeology museum), Carmen Thyssen Museum, the Museo Picasso Málaga, the Centre Pompidou Málaga, the Colección del Museo Ruso (Collection of the Russian Museum), the Museum Jorge Rando, the Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares (Museum of Arts and Popular Traditions), and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga (CAC Málaga; opened 2003, near the Alameda train station).

La Malagueta is a bullring at Málaga, Andalucía, Spain which since 1876 has been denominated a cultural asset of Spain (BIC). It is located in the eastern district of Málaga, alongside the Paseo de Reding.

At the foot of the Alcazaba hill you can see The remains of the Roman theater which dates from the 1st century BC, and was rediscovered in 1951.

Another must see square is Plaza de la Constitución where you can sit at Cafe Central and take a walk through the 3d most expensive street in Spain, Calle Marques Larios.

Cervantes theater

Cervantes theater is Malaga’s oldest stage still in use with a seating capacity of 1200 seats. It also hosts the The second most important Film Festival in Spain after the San Sebastian Film Festival. The building of the theater was built in 1869. 

In summer many enjoy Malaga beach, during winter you could enjoy the beach views

Fried Fish in Malaga

For Lunch you could have Tapas in Calle Granada, But the locals usually eat at the fishermen villages and here I will show you some of the foods we had. Málaga’s cuisine is known for its fried fish.

LOCAL FESTIVITIES 

Malaga Spanish Film Festival is a Spanish film festival held annually in Malaga with the aim of promoting Spanish cinema. film show in Spain after San Sebastian . Since 2008, the film festival has been held in April. Competitive screening of films takes place at the Cervantes Theater, Echegaray Theater and Albenis Cinema.

The Fiestas de Carnaval, in which people dress in all types of costumes, takes place prior to the holy 40 days of Lent every February. A contest is held in the Teatro Cervantes between groups of singers, quartets and choirs who compete in the singing of ironic songs about social and political issues. The Carnival takes to the streets of Málaga on the week before Ash Wednesday, ending on Malagueta beach with the burial of the anchovy (entierro de la sardina)

If you visit during Christmas time you can enjoy Malaga’s notorious Christmas lights. . 

Feria de Málaga in August: During the celebration the streets of the city transform into traditional symbols of Spanish culture and history, with sweet wine, tapas, and live flamenco shows. The day events consist of dancing, live music (such as flamenco or verdiales, traditional music from Málaga) and bullfights at La Malagueta, while the night fair is moved to the Recinto Ferial, consisting of restaurants, clubs, and an entire fair ground with rides and games.)
