How To Stay Cool in Spain during Summer

Here are the tips to stay nice and cool during hot summer in Spain.

#1 Stay inside during siesta time.

The hottest part of the day in Spain is between 12am and 4pm. and a lot of local businesses close for a lunch break so you might as well eat or take a nap somewhere cool. Also you should avoid any hard physical activity during this time.

#2 Stay somewhere with air conditioning

If you don’t have an AC at home, you can go to public places like museums, gyms, shopping centers, movie theaters or libraries.

#3 Water is your friend

Drink water, take showers, go to swim in a pool, you can also put a soaking tower over your head and shoulders, and if you have a spray you can spray water on you throughout the day.

#4 Create air circulation

Open doors and windows to create air flow. Hang a wet towel on a window to help cool down your room. If you have a fan at home, put a cold water bottle or an ice cube in front of your fan and enjoy the cool air. Also consider getting a ceiling fan, which is also a good solution to help the air circulation.

#5 Go out

The best times to go out are in the evening or early morning when the sun is not as active. Bring a hand fan, an umbrella, or both if you like. And try to stay in the shade.

#6 Close your blinds

To prevent the Sun's rays from entering your home, close the blinds during the day. You can open them at night to let cooler air inside.

#7 Remove any sofa pillows, rugs or carpets

Simply store them away till it is cooler because they emit heat and accumulate dust.

#8 What to wear

Wear lightweight  loose and breathable clothing, preferably light colored. Footwear that won’t leave your feet sweaty. Also keep your hair tied in a ponytail, braid or a bun. Don’t forget about hats, they can provide you some shade and sunglasses will protect your eyes from damaging UV rays.

#9 Put sunscreen

UV rays can also be harmful to your skin. So use a cream or makeup with SPF and remember to reapply it every few hours to make sure you reduce the risk of burning.

#10 AVOID

Turn off all devices that you aren’t using and that aren’t essential.

Avoid using things that produce a lot of heat like incandescent light bulbs, ovens and microwaves.

Don’t eat large, protein-heavy meals because they can make you feel full and raise metabolic heat. Better to eat something smaller and if you get hungry eat a quick snack, smoothies, gazpachos, salads or fruits. Don’t drink coffee or alcohol because they dehydrate your body and promote urination.

The goal is to stay cool and hydrated

I hope these tips will help you survive the heat. Take care! Thank you for reading! And enjoy summer!
